As the holidays are approaching and guests are coming, consider going to an import store to pick up some of those special items – cheeses, meats, veggies.  You might be surprised to find that the prices and the quality will be much better than the supermarket version.  It may keep you from going out to eat, which again saves money!

If you have priced hams lately, you may have been in shock.  Here is another money saving idea:  many discount grocery stores have ham pieces, normally with the rind, that are cut up already in a package for $2-$3 per pound.  Buy a package or two. and freeze until 3 days before Thanksgiving.  Then defrost in the refrigerator, pour dark Karo syrup over it and heat in a crockpot on Thanksgiving morning.  No one will know you did not spend $50 on you ham – and it is pre-sliced and ready to go!

As the thoughts of guests are in your head, make sure your plumbing situation is ready.  Consider stocking up on various sized plungers – inexpensive without the fold out, one with it, a small drain plunger, an accordion type, and strainers to keep out items that could cause issues.  So much cheaper than a plumber and reusable.  Now that’s frugal!

As you prepare for guests, if you notice some of your grout has disappeared, there is help.  Your local flooring store might have special colored caulk that is designed to fill in between tiles.  If you have a piece of the grout, it will be easier to match.  Much cheaper than replacing all of you floor or wall.  Now that’s frugal!

If you have a new car where the dealer has given you free oil changes, make sure you take the recommended extra services with a grain of salt.  Do your research ahead of time to see which services are actually worth it.  Certain engine treatments make actually improve gas mileage, so it would more than pay for itself.  Other services may be unnecessary or overpriced.  Be prepared so you can make the right fiscal decision!

With winter upon us, watch your windshield.  Keep some of those “gas station” towels on hand (available in a roll at O’Reilly’s or Auto Zone).  If you have a chip, have it checked out by a glass company.  Some of them can actually be eliminated.  Others, if they are filled, will be less likely to run since water will not get in and turn to ice.  Normally, $30 to $40 will take care of this.  This is certainly much less than a new windshield.  Frugal!

As you check over your Christmas list, consider going to Marshall’s, TJ Maxx, Ross’ for their great line of gift items.  These stores buy the inventory after close out sales of department stores.  Obviously, last years socks, underwear, never-out-style shoes, etc. look the same as this years’ items.  Of course, the many kitchen and household items they have are always in style.  Places like Macys and Dillards have rotations of best selling items and the last mark-down step merges into the sell to the discount stores.  Their holiday decoration selection will also knock your socks off, but for less money!  Check it out for yourself – same quality, a fraction of the cost!

If you are looking for comfortable and stylish shoes and looking to make a difference, combine these by buying some Toms shoes.  For each pair sold, they donate a pair.  Awesome idea!  They normally run great specials on their stock, as well.  Now that’s frugal!

Save money on your furnace bill.  Look into oil filled radiator heaters as well as ceramic and milkhouse heaters for the bathroom and kitchen table.  They work great for bedrooms and will allow you to greatly decrease your thermostat.  This is the time of year that they are discounted.  You may be able to grab one for $30 if you look around.  They really work and save money!  With your thermostat down during the day, make sure you pick up some thermal hunting socks.  They really work around the house as well.  More money saving!

Hewlett Packard Home Store (Hewlett-Packard Home Store)

If you love home-made breads, do a little research in your town.  Some grocery stores, cake shops, health food stores, and of course bakeries, have great selections of bread.  The prices and quality will pleasantly surprise you.  Your tummy will be glad you did.

If you have not been to Ruby Tuesdays lately, consider going.  The prices are in line with steakhouses, but their steaks are much better.  Check it out!

If you love shish kabobs, but do not like the hassle of trying to keep everything on the skewers, here is a great idea.  Buy kabob baskets, which will keep everything on and makes flipping so easy.  You will find that you are eating your favorite more often; perhaps even staying home instead of going out to eat.  Now that’s frugal!

Check out your local thrift stores for great clothes.  Some will even still have the original tags on them!  Also, look for specials on certain days for added savings.  You will have to pick through the selection, but you will find all types of clothes – even dress clothes – in near new shape at unbeatable prices.  Now that’s frugal!

For all the pet lovers that hate putting flea and tick medicine on their dogs, who normally have to interest in feeling the liquid go into their fur on their backs, there is great news.  From the makers of Frontline, comes a pill: NexGard.  All they have to do is chew and swallow the great tasting (to a dog) pill.  It could not be easier. At less than $20 each, it is even reasonably priced!

The easy way to stop, coat and seal leaks fast: Flex Seal.  It really does work well.  Pick up a can to have on hand.  It now comes in a total of 12 colors!

If you have an animal cage outside, look into getting your pine or cedar shavings from a farm and home store.  You can probably pick up a bag that is twice as big for half the price.  Now that’s frugal!

If you are looking for discontinued Mary Kay items, consider using eBay.  You will be able to compare prices pretty easily.  Read the seller feedback before buying.  There are plenty of buy now options – normally at prices that are even less than the original.  Now that’s frugal!

As the weather gets colder (and drier), make sure to have plenty of hand lotion for your hands and feet.  It may save some unwanted medical issues in the future.

If your state DMV has an online option, you should consider taking advantage of it.  Of course, you still have to have your car inspected and have your property taxes current, where applicable.  What you do not have to worry about is waiting in line, or driving to their office.  When you go through the online process, you know what you need, you fill in the information, and you get a temporary registration until yours comes in the mail in a few days.  Saves time and gas and time.  Now that’s frugal!

Look into Delta SkyMiles.  You can earn miles everytime you fly.  They fly almost everywhere.  WIth their home office in such an enormous airport (Atlanta) you have many advantages.  The best way to take advantage of this is to pair it with a Delta SkyMiles credit card from American Express.  Upon approval, you get a bonus of 30,000 miles and a $50 statement credit.  As long as you book with the card, your first bag flies free.  This saves you $25 on each flight!  You also get priority boarding, in flight discounts and you earn Delta miles for each dollar you spend.  Now that’s frugal!

In addition to GoodRx, there are other discount prescription avenues.  Compare, compare, compare!  Some local pharmacies have grants where you can save hundreds of dollars by using their pharmacy combined with county clinics who mostly operate through grants.  It is very much worth investigating in your local area.  Saving hundreds of dollars – now that’s frugal!

Shop Matresses

Think Sam’s Club for great deals on mattresses:

Sam’s Club

Once you have your bed, make sure you stay warm in it with a Sunbeam electric blanket.  Since they run specials from time to time, you will have the check the prices to see which sizes are the best deal.  If you have a king size, sometimes it is better to get two twins.  It just depends on the prices at the time.  This will also allow you to turn down the thermostat on the furnace and save money on heating.  Now that’s frugal!

If you are in the market for a toaster oven, consider the Delonghi RO2058 Convection Toaster Oven:

It is also a convection oven and rotisserie.  There is plenty of room for a small frozen pizza or 6 -8 slices of toast (depends on the type of bread).  It is made by a very reliable Italian company and so reasonably priced.  However, do not bother with the puller – it is hard to use and to store.  Also, make sure not to pull the grate too far out.  All in all, a very qulaity product.  Highly recommended!

If you have a house or car loan, consider paying extra to whittle down your debt faster.  Just to give you an idea, for a $20,000 loan over 72 months, adding about $25 per month will shorten the loan period by 6 months.  An additional $50 will shorten it by 12 months.  It is a linear relationship, so calculating other numbers are fairly easy.  Of course, you pay much less in interest as well.  If you do not want to unnecessarily mix credit reports and accounts, a money order will take care of that potential quagmire.  Obviously, this works even better for a 360 month (30 year) house loan.  Be frugal – save interest!
